A mane and tail brush with long wavy bristles will become an essential part of your grooming kit. There are three simple steps to using this brush on tatty tails. Then a similar method when using on manes.
Tails - first step, twist the tail and leave around 6 inches at the bottom untwisted. Start by brushing the untwisted base of the tail first.
Second step, slowly untwist the tail brushing the strands that become loose as you go. Keep the brush angled for maximum affect.
Third step, once the tail has been fully untwisted and brushed. start at the very top of the tail and brush the tail from the very top all the way down, keeping the brush flat against the hair. This method not only removes dirt and tangles, it also protects the hair from breaking which can happen if tails are combed through too often, or with inappropriate grooming tools.
Manes - starting at the base of the neck, hold the brush longways in your hand and begin to brush the full length of the mane, working up towards the ears. Go back to the base, then by holding the brush longways go through the brushing process again, back up the the ears.
Once again go to the base of the neck and with one hand section off handfuls of mane and brush through by lifting the hair away from the base of the mane. This method encourages the mane to lie flat (if long) and again will protect the hair from damage.
